ECB's Berlin meeting opens with markets split on whether Lagarde holds or hikes the deposit rate to 2.50%

The European Central Bank's Governing Council meets September 9-10 in Berlin, hosted by the Deutsche Bundesbank, with the rate decision and Christine Lagarde's press conference scheduled for the second day. The deposit facility rate has been held at 2.25% since the June 11 hike from 2.00%, and the July 23 meeting kept the three key rates unchanged while flagging oil prices and Middle East tensions as the dominant input. ING's Carsten Brzeski has read Lagarde's July tone as pointing to an almost-done-deal September move, with markets split between a hold and a hike.
