August CPI lands Thursday with consensus at 3.4% as tariff and energy pressures test the Fed's patient stance

The BLS releases the August consumer-price index on Thursday, September 11 at 8:30am Eastern, with consensus calling for a 0.2% monthly rise in headline CPI and an annual rate around 3.4%, little changed from July's 3.36%. Morningstar and RBC flag energy re-acceleration, with RBC looking for a 0.4% monthly headline increase and a 0.24% core reading, while Fed rhetoric has hardened into a more hawkish reaction function as Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole emphasis carries into the September 15-16 FOMC. The August print is the last major inflation input before the Fed's decision week.
