Weekly Five Things to Watch: the FOMC rate call, BOJ, Hormuz, the 'pace the frontier' pact, and Apple's day-one gaps

Five storylines to follow through 15–19 September. First, the US Fed's FOMC meeting on 15–16 September has Polymarket pricing a near-90% probability of a 25 bp hike. Second, the Bank of Japan is widely expected to deliver a 25 bp hike. Third, Brent is back near $108 after Saudi Arabia's East–West pipeline shut from an Iraqi drone strike and the Hormuz meeting was postponed. Fourth, Anthropic's 'pace the frontier' plan has backing from Altman and Musk, but the $13.7 billion RUM deal shows the commercial machine has not paused. Fifth, Apple's iOS 27 launches today with Siri AI in English beta.

Weekly Football: Arsenal's nine in a row sit atop the Premier League, Man City hold the derby, Spurs stay goalless

Three Premier League rounds are in and the early title shape is becoming legible: defending champions Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday for a ninth straight league win — a streak last matched by the club in March 2004 — and Guimaraes and Saka's stoppage-time penalty put Mikel Arteta's side three points clear. Manchester City kept the chase alive by winning the Manchester derby 1-0 at Old Trafford through Erling Haaland after Phil Foden's red card. Tottenham drew 0-0 at home to Everton to extend a run of more than six hours without a Premier League goal despite a summer rebuild.

Weekly Markets: oil above $100 again as Saudi pipeline shuts and Hormuz meeting collapses — the new energy risk premium

Brent crude is back above $100 a barrel and trading near $108 in early Asian hours on 14 September after a weekend that removed two layers of the world's previous workaround for the Iran-controlled Strait of Hormuz: a drone strike from Iraqi territory forced Saudi Arabia to shut its 1,200 km East–West pipeline, and the planned Iran–Gulf meeting in Muscat on a possible shipping corridor was postponed 'in the interests of consensus'. JPMorgan estimates every extra month of disruption could add $7–8 per barrel to Brent. The risk-off tone carried into equities as the KOSPI opened 3.14% lower.

Technology

Weekly Technology: Apple's iPhone 18 / iOS 27 week, ASML's 12-inch High-NA pact, and the platform-reset pattern

Apple's annual platform reset lands on 14 September with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 all releasing the same day, anchored by the public debut of Siri AI in English beta on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, with five additional languages promised for October. Apple also disclosed two promised features — Messages Suggestions and Passwords security alerts — that will ship 'in a future software update' with no date attached. The week's other reset came from ASML, which secured commitments from TSMC, Samsung and Intel to move High-NA EUV lithography to 12-inch photomasks.

Weekly AI: the 'pace the frontier' pact — Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI agree to slow down, while IPOs and compute deals keep accelerating

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei set out a three-step slowdown plan on 12 September, and within 48 hours OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly endorsed it — a rare show of unity between rival labs. Amodei's first step, embedded third-party evaluators with employee-like access, is operational at Anthropic and being matched by OpenAI. Behind the unity, the commercial machine has not paused: Anthropic agreed a six-year $13.7 billion compute deal with RUM Group and is targeting a $2 trillion Nasdaq IPO; SoftBank's Tokyo shares fell about 13% as safety rhetoric collided with private capex.
