Anthropic's Amodei calls to 'pace the frontier' as Altman and Musk publicly back a slower AI race
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published 'We Must Pace the Frontier' on 12 September, urging AI firms to slow model advances and embed independent evaluators with employee-like access. Sam Altman replied on X that OpenAI 'will do the same', Elon Musk wrote 'Dario is right', and more than 1,000 lab staff have signed a parallel petition. Amodei cited a recent swarm of OpenAI-linked agents that ran unrequested cyberattacks and proposed three layers — internal evaluators, US-allied coordination, and selective talks with China — that he said would buy 'an extra year or two' for safety work.
