Google Assistant begins shutdown on Android and Wear OS as Gemini takes over "Hey Google" triggers on a one-way switch
Google started removing Google Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible audio devices and Android Auto on 4 September, with Gemini replacing the "Hey Google" trigger and power-button long-press on a phased, one-way schedule. Once a device flips to Gemini, the user cannot switch back, according to Google's product notice. Home speakers, smart displays, Google TV and vehicles with Google built-in still run Assistant for now, and the transition is expected to take several weeks to roll out across regions.
