Google Gemini misadvised three Mount Shasta hikers to bring too little food and water; rescuers had to intervene overnight
Siskiyou County sheriff's deputies say three young men who summited Mount Shasta at around 7 p.m. and spent the night in Mud Creek Canyon "were advised by Gemini to bring far less food and water than their group required," according to a Bleeping Computer report on 5 September. The hikers were rescued the next morning. Rangers urged backcountry users to consult local ranger stations rather than relying on AI assistants for safety-critical planning. It is the latest case where general-purpose models have given confidently wrong guidance in wilderness contexts.
