Japan bankrolls two GlobalFoundries fabs in New York
Japan will provide about $21 billion for two GlobalFoundries semiconductor plants in Malta, New York. The first 300mm fab is due to break ground this year at a cost of roughly $10 billion and to start operating in 2029, with a second plant funded by a similar amount; each would add 900,000 wafers of annual capacity, which GlobalFoundries chief executive Tim Breen said lifts US wafer capacity by about 10 percent. Washington will take a stake of roughly four percent and is reallocating $955 million of CHIPS funding to advanced packaging and silicon photonics.
