JAMA tightens disclosure rules after a surge of formulaic AI submissions
JAMA and the twelve other journals in its network adopted a stricter policy on authors' use of augmented-intelligence tools after a sharp rise in formulaic submissions, particularly letters to the editor and opinion essays. Authors must disclose AI assistance in detail, AI cannot be listed as an author, and AI-generated images are restricted. The network reported that among more than 100,000 manuscripts submitted to its 13 journals between August 2023 and October 2025, 3.3% carried an author-declared disclosure of AI use.
