Ireland fines Google €403 million for GDPR breaches on location data, its fourth-largest EU privacy penalty
Ireland's Data Protection Commission fined Google €403 million ($463 million) on Monday for mishandling users' location data in breach of the EU's GDPR, ruling that processing through Web & App Activity, Location History and Android's Location Accuracy feature was not lawful, fair or transparent. The decision caps a six-year investigation covering May 2018 to February 2020 and orders Google to comply within six months. It is the DPC's fourth-largest fine ever and the first against Google at this scale, behind a €1.2 billion penalty issued to Meta in 2023.
