Le Fée penalty gives Sunderland first European win in 53 years
Sunderland marked their return to European football with a 1-0 Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar at the Stadium of Light, Enzo Le Fée converting a 66th-minute penalty after Weslley Patati fouled him inside the box. The result ended a 53-year European winless streak stretching back to 1973 under Régis le Bris, with goalkeeper Robin Roefs saving from Mexx Meerdink late on to preserve the lead. Kevin Danso and Le Fée had earlier hit the woodwork as Sunderland dominated the first half without scoring.
